Senator Obama has made history today by becoming the first black president of the US after.
Partial results show Senator Obama has won the crucial battleground state of Ohio and is leading in Florida, two states that President George Bush won in 2004. He has also held the important Democrat state of Pennsylvania, which his rival John McCain had fought hard to win as insurance. There were also signs that Senator Obama would win previously Republican states in the midwest and the south, with Iowa declared for Senator Obama and North Carolina leaning towards him. The first batch of early numbers in the battleground states show a strong swing to the Democratic candidate. Early numbers in Florida show Senator Obama leading Senator McCain 53% to 47%. The Illinois senator is also proving competitive in Indiana and North Carolina, two Republican strongholds
